Using a needle for an IV when there's a PICC line is just plain medical idiocy. And why would they not let the her nurse in the room? Probably the ER doctor was so guilty and embarrassed at being caught he just "hung up" on Amanda's doctor and was relieved to see her go.

Of course they're going to bill the heck out of her and make her spend the same money on lawyers otherwise.

Edited: It's been pointed out in the comments that PICC lines aren't always used for some medical reasons. When my late wife had one it was always used so I assumed that was true.

I don't get why her private nurse couldn't be in there, though.

I’ve decided to not ever go to a hospital if something “internal” happens to me — I’ll only go if I’m in a major accident or something “external” happens to me. Hospitals today are killing fields!

Over 6 years ago, my husband had a stroke at the gym. I took him home, and with help cared for him for over a year. Our last year together was filled with laughter and problem-solving (we’re both engineers). He died peacefully at home, age 90. Never even went to a doctor.
