Using a needle for an IV when there's a PICC line is just plain medical idiocy. And why would they not let the her nurse in the room? Probably the ER doctor was so guilty and embarrassed at being caught he just "hung up" on Amanda's doctor and was relieved to see her go.

Edited: It's been pointed out in the comments that PICC lines aren't always used for some medical reasons. When my late wife had one it was always used so I assumed that was true.
I don't get why her private nurse couldn't be in there, though.
