In my professional medical opinion (And as a prior flight doc) either this article was intended to be satire (in that case it’s really funny) or it is complete garbage and it was written with the intent of taking advantage of a normal person’s medical ignorance.
#1) a 1st degree heart block (defined as a PR interval > 0.2), with a PR interval between 0.2 and 0.3 is basically a normal finding. It’s extremely common and nothing is done for it. Anything greater than 0.3 would be considered a ‘marked’ first degree block and would need additional testing. The article states that the FAA now allows a PR interval “from 0.2 to unlimited.” This is comical. What would a PR interval of unlimited even mean? FYI, the FAA requires additional testing for a PR interval> 0.3 (not ‘unlimited’)
#2) The story about the 66 yr old dude is even more comical. First, he states that he is a commercial pilot. In the US people are not allowed to be commercial pilots after age 65. He states that he developed an asymptomatic Mobitz type 2 heart block. Contrary to a 1st degree heart block, a Mobitz type 2 is a very dangerous type of second degree heart block. It represents a significant issue with the conduction system of the heart. If someone develops this, they don’t even let them leave the hospital because they need to have a ICD placed (pacemaker that can also defibrillate) immediately because they have such a high risk of a lethal arrhythmia. He wouldn’t be waiting for an appointment with his cardiologist next week, he would be admitted to the hospital awaiting ICD placement- today. Additionally, heart disease has been a leading cause of death in western society for decades. It has never mattered that you were an endurance athlete when you were younger. Marathon runners still die of heart disease.
The FAA has to process thousands of flight physicals every year. To me, it makes total sense that they would eliminate the need for further testing on a pilot with a PR interval <0.3- not because they are trying to cover something up but because they are trying to become more efficient.
