My vet sent me a reminder to get 2 jabs (including rabies) for the hound who is just 4.. So, being the awkward Irishman I am I requested the safety studies for the 2 (1) Individually, (2) Combined and (3) For a great dane. They responded that they do not have that (duh!) but would ask the poison manufacturer. Its local rep sent a standard email saying that both are good. I asked again for the safety studies and got the standard insert in the reply - as these are not safety studies I asked again and was told by the vet to Go Contact The Manufacturer Directly! Still being stubborn I asked the vet why she did not have this on hand - well that seemed to blow our vet / patient relationship up big time!!!
My little house dog has none since her puppy DHP at 15weeks. Yes rabies is required, at 6&12 mos then every 3 years, but I managed to find a vet, after lots of phone calls, who would spay her (after she’d had two heat cycles) without it. Delaying neutering also reduces 4 different types of cancer. If rabies were common in my area, or if I had a dog breed prone to biting, I would give one with a vet who would dose per weight, and then titer. Your vet only gets one interestingly enough. The last case was decades ago. So not worth the risk of side effects.
I stopped taking my dog and cat to vets years ago. They each had a bunch of shots when first acquired. All I asked for was rabies but they forced me to get a bunch of other stuff. Since then I just don’t take them. They are both super healthy, happy animals. No fleas or ticks, no weird skin issues, they are both thin and active--and super smart. They are both mostly mutt so that may help as well.
