Why are we animating an incomplete and imperfect section of knowledge?
Medicine has no soul. It does not have any spirit, either, apart from that served at symposia and conferences. It does not have any heart. It certainly does not have any brains - which is proven by continuous contradictions, peer reviewing required to anoint the only allowed aspect of the dogma, and withdrawal of what is not considered sacred enough.
In fact, there is nothing like “medicine” in existence. The term suggests an autonomous entity, which is why it has a distinct name. But the very existence of psychiatry and psychology - broadly included in medicine (same titles, same letters before surnames) - contradicts it being a cohesive entity. To be a fully-fledged entity, some unifying master system should be there. There is none. Unlike with Chinese traditional medicine, Hindu ancient medicine, or Arabic ancient medicine - which are all recognized by WHO:
“Traditional and complementary medicine (T&CM) is an important and often underestimated health resource with many applications, especially in the prevention and management of lifestyle-related chronic diseases, and in meeting the health needs of ageing populations.” (WHO global report on traditional and complementary medicine 2019). Or “WHO benchmarks for the practice of ayurveda”.
However, all that is currently going on with both old-style medicine (aka “allopathic” medicine, the bad one) and new medicine (“free”, or “evidence based” or “functional”) alike, is a huge attempt to resuscitate a half-dead thing that has discredited itself big time in the period 2019-2023. It is abundant with errors, harm, empty theories, dead end explanations, complete lack of control over drugs - which by definition are always harmful, inability to address chronic conditions, neglecting obvious signals reported by patients, and more.
So, it is not a fight for the soul of anything. It is a big fight for survival of funding streams, lifetime comfy positions, and status quo of a large cohort of experts, professionals, specialists, researchers, and their families. As such, it is a good approach, people are always important. There is no need to disguise this routine human effort in a sacred term from the realm of religion.
