I was a veterinary technician for nearly 12 years. EVERY patient that lived well beyond their years was always unvaccinated or only for their initial puppy/kitten shots and then never came in unless they were sick. Funny thing is…they were rarely ever sick! Their visits were extremely minimal. I’ve seen a 16 year old German shepherd (insane) and one of the cat patients at a clinic I worked at was 26 years old!! The vet verified the age because she saw him as a kitten. She said they never vaccinate their cats and that client always had THE oldest cats she had ever seen! Makes you wonder.

RFK Jr had a podcast on this awhile ago. One take away I got was that according to a 8yr long German study the rabies vaccine given in the first year lasts at least 8 years. There’s no need to give it every year as many townships require.

Yes!! I had a shih-tzu patient that only had puppy series and didn’t get anything else after that for his entire life. Last I saw him he was 12 years old and all his antibodies were just as strong! The owner chose vaccine titers for his annual visits instead of vaccines. Sure enough he was good for his entire life with JUST receiving his puppy series. He did get rabies since it’s by law and he also moved to England. Huge paperwork with rabies for pets moving there.

Wonder no more. My father never vaccinates their dogs, except for rabbies.
