Maybe so, but you didn’t know that when you enlisted. You just proved my point. Whether you believe it or not, you are a hero to tens of millions of us. I have a sinking feeling that those words are embarrassing to you which only FURTHER proves my point. How do we repay you? What can WE do for YOU and all the other veterans? Nothing seems to be enough to me. Just please know how so many of us feel regardless of how crappy our government treats you.
If you live near a VA hospital you can volunteer your time.
Lots of vets are homeless or are in danger of becoming homeless. I support them by sending a monthly donation a faith-based homeless shelter that goes out into the community and provides needed items to the homeless. For example, this past summer they requested extra funds to provide bottled water during a heat wave. These guys are great. Many who work there have been homeless themselves or have wrestled with drug and alcohol addictions. They are dialed into VA points of contact to further help any homeless veterans they encounter.
There are others who made more of a sacrifice than I ever did.
In Pennsylvania, you can get a license plate for your vehicle that reads, "Gold Star Family."
It tells the world that you had a family member who died in combat.
