In the end, I didn't need to go further, but my course was going to be citing the Supreme Court ruling on conscientious objectors. In their decision they clearly stated that one's actions do not need to be dictated by a church or a church's doctrine but, rather, that it may come from conscience dictated to the individual by a higher power or authority.
