They dispensed with the discovery of truth long, long ago. Now they will turn on themselves, indeed have already begun — dropping enrollment, widespread demoralization — and the knife fights in these bureaucracies will only increase as they each struggle to survive. They created their little garden of poison ivies and deadly nightshade and now they have to play in it.
I spent a substantial portion of my life in that environment, having also served eight years as a soldier in combat arms specialties, and certainly agree the academic cloister is nothing new but the now overwhelming control of intolerant, anti-intellectual political zealots within academia is, in my experience.
Incidentally after separating from the military institution, which I'd come to find repulsive, I initially loved the academic environment, ultimately intending to serve as a professor, however even then it became clear the academy was growing ever more intolerant and toxic. Now happily free of all institutions (soon cruising under sail full time) I'm in a position to discuss issues thoughtfully and honestly with other open minded, thoughtful people who are actual intellectuals (no grad degree required).
The academics and the bureaucrats in American colleges are people who are incapable of making a living anywhere else and must find a way to survive, as all creatures on this earth are compelled to do. To feed at the trough, they must herd with the rest, ideationally speaking, or be kicked out into the wilderness where people like you and I have been hunters on our own and eat what we kill.
The trend in the academy long ago moved away from scholarship and towards falsehood and fraud -- this is unsurprising because academics long ago loudly announced to all who might hear them (and few did) that they had dispensed with truth. Without the goal of attaining to truth, they can only pretend to discover it.
Of course, there are exceptions and real scholars still exist, such as Stephen Kotkin at Princeton or Yuri Slezkine at Berkeley or Victor Hanson and Thomas Sowell as Stanford. There must be young ones, too. I'm always surprised that they have not only survived but seemingly have even thrived in those environments. I'm very encouraged by the recent development of the classical schools, the University of Austin and, of course, homeschooling. Great things are happening -- what we are witnessing is the end of the Leftist's castle, crumbling upon his foundation of sand.
Absolutely, we must remember though the institution may be deeply debased by intellectually inept political ideologues there are courageous, intelligent, tolerant professionals among them still. Like you I don't know how they stomach that environment today. I think in my case having exited an institution which I'd found to be intellectually oppressive and profoundly destructive to society (the military) I quickly came to realize I was heading into another toxic institution (at great expense) albeit almost the polar opposite in most regards.
Incidentally, though I have no reason to make my own case, to address those who might think I'm a disgruntled grad school dropout that is not the case. I was studying in a well known graduate program, which anyone in the field would recognize immediately, and had completed the Masters level without any great difficulty but decided not to pursue a Ph.D. as originally intended for the reason noted. Two professors, both well known and regarded in the field for good reason, encouraged me to change my mind with one offering to remove any financial obstacles, which was a dream offer since I'd expended most of my military savings at that expensive private graduate school at that point. I of course expressed my deep appreciation for the offer then told him, frankly and for the first time, why I'd decided to leave, noting it had nothing to do with the financial challenge which I knew I could recover from later. Since I'd never discussed my observations regarding political degradation of the academic field with him before I was quite surprised when he acknowledged, without reservation, that my reason for leaving was sound. He was one of the few truly intellectual and independent minded professors I came to know while a grad student; a remarkable professor and human being.
I'm not going to name the professor because I value anonymity but I can tell a story. I was a brand new grad student still very much unaccustomed to the new academic environment I was in, which was very different from my undergrad experience, and I believe it was the second or third session of our first micro theory class when I asked this professor a question and used the word "need". He instantly exploded, as in yelled loudly, in response while impressing upon us why that term had no place in any discussion of microeconomic theory; and as I came to understand with more study he was absolutely correct. The class of newbie grad students was aghast and I was certainly surprised by his response. After he finished energetically emphasizing his point I responded by noting that I had never looked at the matter that way, and oh by the way I'd had drill sergeants who made him look like a pussycat. In response he grinned and laughed. I'm happy to report the other students survived the encounter :)
