I know statistical theory quite well which is precisely why I say these things to Steve. Much of what Nicolas posts violates the mathematical foundations of statistics outright.

None of this exists in the real world.

MPH and MD programs teach statistics at a freshman (purely mechanical) level. There is no understanding of the underlying mathematics, which is not surprising, since it requires real analysis and measure theory.
The uncomfortable truth is that many statisticians donโt fully understand this either. It takes years of practice before it sinks in that much of what we routinely do doesnโt actually work as advertised.
Bayesian methods are the closest thing we have to a good alternative, but they are rarely taught. We certainly didnโt teach them. Even students in mathematical statistics often fail to grasp what the theory is really saying. The ideas are abstract, but the flaw is simple: the logic is wrong.
All of this is laid out clearly in the book Bernoulliโs Fallacy. And thatโs ultimately where Iโm coming from. The mathematics is beautifulโbut it is built almost entirely on asymptotic theory, which cannot be implemented in the real world the way people pretend it can. People talk about probability and distributions as if they exist. As if they were things. They don't exist and nothing has a distribution. If they do I've never seen one. Where are they?
