Asymptomatic myocarditis can also cause atrial fibrillation, and if that is what is involved, the pilot cannot be issued a medical certificate. This is a big deal. Dr. Wong is trying to make it look like this is not a big deal.
There is a list of a dozen or so "normal abnormal" EKG findings that FAA provides to medical examiners, saying that we can issue pilots' medical certificate renewals without requiring them to undergo a time-consuming and expensive cardiology workup, so long as we verify that they have had no cardiac symptoms. These range from left atrial enlargement to left axis deviation to incomplete right bundle branch block to voltage criteria for left ventricular hypertrophy, to first degree AV block. All they did was lengthen the P-R interval from 0.22 to 0.30 seconds, below which we don't have to get a cardiology consult in order to certify, so long as there are no signs or symptoms of cardiac disease or dysrhythmia.

We all went to a hospital to stand outside theatre and watch some surgery.
After the visit was over, "Any questions?"
Nobody had any - medics aren't the most forthcoming - but the doc in charge said to me, "Next time you come, wear a tie - the patients expect it."
