The BMJ opened an investigation into the Mostert paper over 2 years ago. There is no update after 2 years. Nothing. Why is this investigation taking so long? We are left in the dark.
Originally, the idea was to look at the effect of COVID measures on, among other things, the mortality rate of children with cancer in low-income countries. During the course of the study, the focus shifted and diverted in a direction that we felt was too far from our expertise: pediatric oncology. We are not experts in epidemiology, nor do we want to give that impression. The Máxima Center therefore emphatically distances itself from this publication. We should have been more alert to the formation and results of this publication and will further investigate the way it was created. If it turns out that carelessness was involved in the realization of this publication, it will of course be withdrawn.
We, as the Princess Máxima Center, want to emphasize that we strongly support vaccination, and that this publication should certainly not be read as an argument against vaccination. The study in no way demonstrates a link between vaccinations and excess mortality; that is explicitly not the researchers' finding. We therefore regret that this impression has been created.
I'm commenting on your cross posted Vinay Prasad post from today since I can't comment there without being a paid subscriber.
My hypothesis as to how they gamed the results:
1. By including only people who received the 2024-2025 flu vaccine they excluded that pesky "never covid vaccinated" group who almost certainly wouldn't take a flu vaccine.
2. Also by including only those who received the 2024-2025 flu vaccine, they exclude those from the "no 2024-2025 covid vaccine" group who simply lost faith in the vaccine, but kept most of those who initially had faith in the covid vaccine, but dropped out after they were injured, quite possibly a year or two after their injury when they finally admitted it to themselves.
3. Note the much higher prior year covid vaccination rates among the "no 2024-2025 vaccine" group, especially in 2022-2023 and 2023-2024. Also note their modestly higher rate of many comorbidities. So vaccine injuries from prior year vaccines are primarily in the "no 2024-2025 covid vaccine" group.
I can only conclude that the study methodology was built to disproportionately dump vaccine injured people into the "no 2024-2025 covid vaccine" group and exclude totally unvaccinated people (covid or otherwise) from that group. Even so, the all cause cardiac event rate is only slightly higher. The covid related cardiac events data is bunk since if the vaccine reduces symptoms, that group is less likely to be covid tested and therefore covid related cardiac events are less likely to be identified.

The number was always adjusted as carefully as possible in order to match excess mortality. Maybe we should stop calling it the covid-19 pandemic, and start calling it THE GREAT SARS PANIC (of 2020).

OWID's linear regression baseline is not too accurate because it's not even adjusted for the population size of age groups. And the selection of 2015-2019 as the fitting period is arbitrary, and often changing the fitting period by 1 or 2 years results in a dramatic change in the slope of the baseline.

So the increase was about 0.15 million in 5 years, similar to how your number of non-COVID deaths increased by about 0.17 million in 5 years.
