Why must "media", "data", and "phenomena" be treated as singular noun forms? Sorry, I'm a bit touchy since I fell on a cacti.
They aren't single/singular forms, they are the Latin plural forms for neuter nouns. Hence, datum is singular, data is plural. Hope this helps, sorry about the cactus! (Fwiw, in Latin cactus is masculine singular, cacti is plural.)
