From what I can see, first of all, never mind the intellectual confidence to do one's own research, most people, whatever their educational attainments, do not have the personal confidence to think for themselves. They also are terrified of social ostracism— which, let's face it, has very real, extremely painful, and dangerous costs. Add to that, I suspect that many people do suspect what's going on, but they're too embarrassed that they've gone along with it all to this point. It's all just too upsetting. So they keep their heads in the sand. It's been gobsmacking to witness over the past several years, what can I say.
