Having spent my childhood summers in NH, driving up from MA I vividly remember the "Live Free or Die" license plates when we crossed over the state line. Dear old Dad was a blue collar democrat but our blue collar uncle, married to Dad's sister, who had a cottage on the same NH lake was a republican. This did not seem to be an issue, they were great friends. As a child I never quite understood the state motto or why NH license plates were "different" but the feeling of freedom in NH back in the mid '60s-mid '80s was palpable.
In the past 20 years, MA residents reportedly fled the high cost of housing in MA to live in NH. NH housing prices have also increased significantly in the last 4 years with the great Covid land rush. NH natives have long bemoaned the influx of "Massholes". Can't say I blame them, not one bit.
Will be interesting to watch if the state swings back to purple or red.
