I know what you mean. I had to move out of the people's republic of NY. The citizens were completely brain-washed with a newspaper-Long Island Newsday - that published lies daily. The current governor and health service make KimJong Un jealous.

I'm from upstate NY originally. No offense, but NYC doesn't produce anything other than financial fraud. The rest of NY would be happy to see all of NYC sink into the sea, or become part of New Jersey. They are a albatross around the rest of the state's neck.
In the 1990's, OMNI, a garbage company doing "sanitary landfills" was looking for a place to install a new landfill for NYC. Here is where they wanted to do it:
That's basically my home town. They were promising an end of taxation for several years for residents, they promised it was sanitary, and it would just create a mountain and wouldn't destroy the area, and I'm certain the mayor was on the take.
When I heard about this, I told my parents to find out where ELSE OMNI did this. The reason they develop landfills around water is that it's more difficult to detect leaching in the landfill. It destroyed the other areas that had taken the deal with the devil.
Harrisville isn't filled with a bunch of wealthy people. It's people that basically just reject city living and having lived in the city, I can now understand why. They aren't used to be tricked and ripped off though, they aren't cynical, they believe the government is beneficial. It was a rude awakening to them. When they found out what OMNI had done to other small towns like there, they went apeshit, and they were right to do so.
OMNI was kicked out, and I won't tell you how but it wasn't just a simple vote. I know what happened because the people that got rid of them are heroes, and their tactics could come back to haunt them, but they did the right thing. It's forgotten by now, hopefully.
I'm not telling you this to shame you or something, but people are oblivious to what their governments do, and all governments do is principally hurt people. Limit your government's power and remember this is your duty to do for whatever area you move into. NYC is a mess, reconsider the politics there, and talk to your current neighbors, and understand why the place you're in is a good place.
Don't think you're not brainwashed. We ALL are to varying extents, me included. Truckers up in Canada know more about the real world than some nitwit like me. I'm a Silly Con Valley Enginerd. My colleagues are clueless. Some group of "geniuses"...
