I live in a city of which are one of the final four participants in the NFL playoffs and I'd be apt to say that a great many are more interested in the NFL, Facebook 'likes' and Twitter feeds than what is affecting their lives and that, therein, lies the problem. People, to a large degree, are ingrained in their own little corners of the world and see nothing beyond themselves like the good readers and writers on these forums.
Yes, I would agree in certain instances. In others it is just their, as I alluded to, complete lack of concern for anything other than themselves. Case in point. A co-worker of mine, in his 50's, told me of a conversation he had with someone in their 30's who replied to the effect that 'you worry too much; there's nothing wrong with the country'.
